Bird Baths InformationAdding a bird bath to your garden is one of the best ways to attract birds to a garden. Because birds always need to drink and wash, you can often create a loyal following of birds to your garden simply by providing a bird bath.
Bird baths aren't only an attractive addition to your garden, but also a benefit to your garden's ecosystem. While providing an amenity to birds, bird baths encourage visiting birds to feed from your soil and plants, helping to keep a natural balance of garden insects.
Bird Bath Tips
Even though birds are naturally attracted to any source of water, relatively shallow bird baths are ideal for birds. Bird baths with a depth of 2 to 3 inches is best for bathing birds. A bird bath with a wide rim provides an area for birds to land and perch before entering the bird bath.
Locate the bird bath in an area that helps protect birds from curious cats. If possible, do not locate the bird bath near fences or trees that may allow cats to easily stalk bathing birds.
Keep bird baths clean by regularly changing the water and scrubbing off any algae that forms. Allowing the standing water in bird baths to sit too long can create ideal conditions for algae to grow and for potentially dangerous mosquitos to breed.
Don't get discouraged if birds don't start using the bird bath right away. Birds will take time to trust that the bird bath is a safe area for bathing, and the changing seasons may affect the types and numbers of birds that visit the bird bath. Keeping the bird bath in one spot and keeping it full with fresh water is the best practice to encourage birds to visit your garden's bird bath. Top of Page |
