Outdoor Thermometers InformationIf you want to know if today is a good day to wear shorts, or if a jacket should be taken along, then outdoor thermometers are the best way to check out the temperature. Outdoor thermometers also allow you to monitor the outside temperature to know when to protect sensitive plants from heat and cold. And, with so many styles to choose from, outdoor thermometers can become an attractive patio accent. Tips for Choosing an Outdoor Thermometer Dial thermometers provide the temperature in a stylish pacakge. Outdoor dial thermometers have a decorative face and stylish frame, adding a lot of form to their function. They are mechanically driven, so no power source is needed. As the outside temperature rises, a metal coil inside the dial thermometer expands, turning the needle higher up on the temperature dial. Although dial thermometers are the most attractive, they are not the most precise. They simply provide the temperature rounded to the nearest marker point on the dial. Digital thermometers make up in precision what they lack in aesthetics. Wireless digital thermometers come with an outdoor sensor that transmits the temperature to a main sensor that is placed indoors. This allows you to monitor the outside temperature from the comfort of your home, often to the precision of one-tenth of a degree. Where to Locate Your Outdoor Thermometer The most important factor in deciding where to locate your outdoor thermometer is sun exposure. Air temperature is always measured in the shade, so it is important to locate your outdoor thermometer out of direct sunlight and in the shade. Thermometers will provide false readings when they are in the sun or near any source of heat. Although outdoor thermometers are weather resistant, they will last much longer if they are kept out of driving rain, snow, and ice. Top of Page |
