Bird Feeders InformationBird feeders are the best way to attract wildlife to your garden. Birds feeding from garden bird feeders also provide ideal conditions for viewing birds up close, and can be very entertaining to watch. There are basically two types of bird feeders: hanging bird feeders and platform bird feeders. Some birds like to feed from hanging feeders, while others prefer platform type feeders. Goldfinches, for example, prefer to feed from hanging feeders. Many larger birds, such as blue jays, prefer platform feeders where they have plenty of room to feed off of sunflower seeds and peanuts. Platform feeders also make it easy to serve up fresh food, such as bread and pieces of fruit.
Where to Put Your Bird Feeder A common complaint is that birds aren't using their feeders. There are many reasons why birds might not use a particular feeder, but the most common is where it is located. Most birds prefer feeding during the morning. A sheltered, southeastern exposure will provide birds with ideal feeding conditions during the morning hours. Also try locating feeders at varying heights, which will encourage more varieties of birds to feed. Just be sure to locate bird feeders in areas where they are safe from neighborhood cats. Finding the ideal location for your bird feeder takes time. Experiment with different locations until you find the one that the birds like best. Always keep your bird feeder clean. Periodically clean the feeder with mild soap and water and allow the feeder to completely dry before refilling it. Keeping the bird feeder clean is just as important as keeping it full of bird seed.
