Rain Gauges InformationRain gauges allow you to keep track of how much rain falls in your garden. Knowing exactly how much rain has fallen during a given time frame can help you decide if the garden needs additional irrigation or if it can survive on rainfall alone. Simple tube rain gauges have a tube marked with measurements of rain. As rain falls, it fills the tube. The amount of rainfall is where the water level is on the marks. Tube rain gauges require you to empty the tube after each rain storm or when the tube fills up. Digital rain gauges also measure rainfall, but the amount of rainfall is wirelessly transmitted to an indoor sensor. Wireless digital rain gauges also record the amount of rainfall over a given time span and do not require emptying. Where to Locate Your Rain Gauge The most accurate measure of rainfall is where rain can fall freely to the ground, away from over-hangs, trees, fences, and the like. Ideally, place your rain gauge in a clear opening in the garden where there are no obstructions to block wind-driven rainfall. To prevent breakage, take glass tube rain gauges indoors when freezing weather is expected. Top of Page |
